1973 (L) BMW E9 3.0 CSL (DAJ 86L)

The BMW E9 3.0 CSL was manufactured as a homologation special to allow the car to be eligible to race in the European Touring Car Championship. The 3.0 CSL was unveiled in 1971 at the Geneva Motor Show, production ran from May 1971 until October 1975 for a total production run of 1,265 units.

The CSL designation stood for “Coupe Sports Lightweight” making a non optioned example 440 points lighter than the same 3.0 CS version. BMW managed to remove weight from the standard CS version by using thinner steel throughout the body, plastic side windows, aluminium doors, boot and bonnet and removal of sound dampening and trim among other reductions.

The 500 cars shipped to the UK has an optional “City Package” which made the car heavier as it retained more of the conveniences of the standard car to make it more driver friendly. The City Package retained electric windows, front bumper, power steering, sound dampening, heated rear screen, tool kit, boot lock, and chassis undercoating protection among others.

This car is one of those 500 and shows only 2 previous owners from new and indicates 55022m which is believed genuine.

The current owner purchased this 3.0 CSL in 2016 in its original colour of Green as a restoration project.

It then went to marque specialists Classic Cars of Kent where it spent over a year being completely stripped down and rebuilt with everything both inside and out either being replaced with new or fully refurbished, we have a photographic record of this nut and bolt rebuild and invoices for over £65000 from CCK to substantiate this level of restoration.

The car was also fitted with a genuine BMW “Batmobile” kit which includes Front Lower Air Dam, Front Wing Strakes, Rear Roof Spoiler and Rear Wing with correct rubber tail fin, these genuine parts were incredibly hard to find and very expensive but again illustrates the attention to detail that makes this car so special.

The car was then given a total repaint in the BMW Chamonix White at a cost of around £18000 and finished with the correct BMW Tri-Colour side stripes.

The interior was given the same attention, all the wood was fully refinished, the whole interior was re trimmed and new carpets were fitted and the door cards were fully refurbished, a set of brand new original Scheel Front Seats and Headrests were sourced from the States which completed the perfect interior.

Even the underside of this car is as good as the exterior.

Mechanically, everything again was replaced or reconditioned including the original engine and transmission. Brakes & suspension were replaced and a stainless steel exhaust fitted.

This car is stunning in every respect and needs to be seen to be truly appreciated.
